Mahogany Tree

 

Mahogany is a straight- grained , reddish brown timber of three tropical hardwood species of the genus Swietenia and include in the family Melia cease.

Mahogany is an expense wood .This wood is illegal as a matter of both U.S and International Law. It is illegal to trade in it, to import it, and possess it.

This wood from Central or South America and may be named Mahogany ,South American Mahogany, Honduras Mahogany ,American Mahogany or Genuine Mahogany etc.. The name Mahogany was initially associated only with those islands in the West Indies under British control. The origin of the name uncertain. But it could be a corruption of ‘m’oganwo’ the name used by the Yoruba and Ibo people of West Africa to describe trees of the genus Khaya, which is closely related to Swietenia.When transported to Jamaica as slaves they gave the same name to the similar trees they saw  there.

Mahogany has a straight ,fine and even grain , and is relatively free of voids and pockets.

Its has very good workability and is very durable.
