Beautiful Western Ghats
The mountain range that runs along the west coast of
peninsular India from Tamil Nadu through Kerala, Karnataka and Goa to
Maharashtra is known as the Western Ghats and is well known for its majestic beauty. It is also among
the top eight biodiversity hotspots in the world.
The Western Ghats (a mountain range at the western edge of the Deccan plateau; ghat means “pass” in Marathi) run almost continuously for
400 miles (640 km) north-south, with the foothills reaching to within 4 miles
(6.4 km) of the Arabian Sea. So it is called Ghats.
The Western Ghats extend from the Satpura Range in the north, stretching
from Gujarat to Tamil Nadu. It traverses south through the states of
Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala.
The Western Ghats perform important hydrological and watershed functions.
Approximately 245 million people live in the peninsular Indian states that receive most of their water supply from
rivers originating in the Western Ghats. Thus, the soil and water of this region sustain
the livelihoods of millions of people.
